Montana Development Program (MDP)

Introduction
Beginning in the 2019/20 Montana Development Program season, Montana Youth Soccer is introducing two sub-programs to MDP. The introduction of these sub-programs is meant to improve MDP by providing players with more effective and pertinent soccer opportunities based on their age and level.

Sub-Programs
Junior Academy
Birth Years: The MDP Junior Academy will be available for players born 2005 through 2008.
Structure: The Juniors will operate and be structured as all MDP age groups were during the 2018/19 season. Players will enjoy a development focused program through 1-2 training weekends a month along with various events during the season, all with some of the best club and college coaches in Montana.
Placement: Players will be placed on either the State Team or Pool Team for their respective age groups after the Identification (ID) events are complete.

Senior Academy
Birth Years: The MDP Senior Academy will be available for players born 2001 through 2004.  *Interested 2005 Birth Year Sophomores can contact Katja Andrew for Information.
Structure: The Seniors will be structured differently from the Juniors. Beyond just focusing on player development, the program will provide players with increased soccer opportunities outside of Montana. Teams will attend showcase events throughout the West in an effort to increase their exposure to college coaches and chances to play beyond youth soccer, all alongside the best players from Montana.
Placement: Players will be notified if they made the final team after the Tryout events are complete.

Identification & Tryouts
Junior Academy
Junior Academy Identification will consist of 3 weekend events in late July through mid-August:
  1. July 27-28 in Helena
  2. August 3-4 in Billings
  3. August 17-18 in Kalispell
Registered players will be able to attend all 3 weekends as they like and are available. MDP coaches will evaluate each participating player based on a variety of on-field areas. At the conclusion of the ID process, players will be placed on either the State Team or Pool Team for their age group based on their evaluation(s). No players will be cut from the program.

Senior Academy
Senior Academy Tryouts will consist of 2 Sunday events in late July and early August:
  1. July 28 in Helena
  2. August 11 in Helena
The July 28 Tryout will be an open event for all 2001-2004 players from across the state that are interested in being part of the program. An invite is not needed to attend.
The August 11 Tryout will be by invite only for 2001-2004 players. Invitations will be sent to players individually from Montana Youth Soccer in advance of this Tryout. Invites will be based on recommendation of Montana Youth Soccer member clubs, as well as evaluations for players in the July 28 open Tryout. At the conclusion of the Tryout process, players will be selected to participate on the final Senior Academy Team for each age group. Not all players are guaranteed a spot on the team, which will be based on their evaluation(s).

Two Regions
To improve efficiencies with players, coaches and the use of multiple sites simultaneously, MDP will consist of just two (2) regions for the 2019/20 season. The state will be split between the East region and the West region. These regions will only apply to the Junior Academy.
The East will consist of Billings, Bozeman and Butte, as well as the surrounding areas to these communities.
The West will consist of Kalispell, Missoula, Helena and Great Falls, as well as the surrounding areas to these communities.

Season Schedules
Junior Academy
The MDP Junior Academy schedule will largely mirror the MDP schedule from the 2018/19 season. Pool teams will continue to train once a month, as will be the case for State teams. Training will begin in late September and conclude in March. The Event schedule for MDP Juniors will mostly consist of the same events as previous seasons, with some potential changes.

Senior Academy
The MDP Senior Academy schedule will not start until the conclusion of the high school soccer season. Training will begin in early November, and on average, the MDP Seniors will train once a month through February. Between December and February, and depending on the availability of each Senior team, MDP will aim to send teams to one out-of-state event (at most) each month.
